How to Start Taking Iodoral Safely – There are two ways to begin iodine therapy.
Option one: Start on the 50mg loading dose immediately. This has the benefit of getting you to the loading dose quickly. The draw back, not everyone tolerates this approach well and there is no good way to predict how your body will take to the sudden change. Remember, if you are presently ingesting only dietary iodine and a multivitamin you are in the 1-2mg iodine per day. That's a 50-25 fold increase and represents a massive change with a mineral that is a stimulant. I have spent many hours on the phone and email counseling people that have suffered the side effects of starting to fast. Some things I have seen include: adrenal burnout, thyroid swelling, thyroid nodules, hypertension, hair loss, water retention, metallic taste, and various other symptoms that you can find on our side effects page.
High dose iodine therapy should be started slowly in every instance.
Option two: Taper up slowly. Every one wants to find the magic pill that's going to fix them now! And if what ails you is iodine deficiency a revolution in your health may be just around the corner. But like many therapies, a gentle start the first time can make a big difference in how you do long term.
A loading dose is the amount of iodine deeded to refill your nutritional reserves and is higher than your maintenance dose will be. The typical loading dose is 50mg daily, so this will be our target. But first you need a few things in place before you start.
Some people need a higher loading dose than 50mg. Individuals that are significantly obese, are trying to overcome a significant illness such as cancer, or are not responding at 50mg may do better on a higher dose. Doses over 50mg should be supervised by an experienced professional.
Getting Started Baseline Check List
Establishing baselines ensures you have everything you need to make good decisions now starting out, later if bumps come along, and determining when you have reached sustainable success. So, get some lab work done and take a few notes. Initial labs should be current within the last 6 months, if you have had a change in your thyroid medication, wait 6-8 weeks to test and begin starting iodine.
