Simple Tests for Iodine & Thyroid Toxins
A simple urine test collected at home can determine if you have iodine deficiency and how severe it is. The test consists of two main parts. 1) A baseline iodine spot test. This is your baseline level of iodine, and relates directly to existing thyroid nutrition. 2) A 24 hour loading test. The saturation test is where you take 50mg of Iodoral and then track how much iodine shows up in your urine over 24 hours. The more iodine you excrete, the healthier your tissue saturation is. The less iodine you excrete, the more deficient you are. The results are then reported as a percent saturation. Normal is 90% saturated (i.e. 90% of the original dose was not needed by the body and showed up in the urine.) The lower the saturation score the greater your need for iodine supplementation.
