Physicians during the first half of the 20th century
regularly used what was called Lugal solution, containing 40% iodine
and 60% iodide as the potassium salt. Doses of this as a 5% solution
commonly went as high as 180mg of elemental iodine daily with the
most common being 90mg, and was prescribed for a variety of
conditions including obesity with very few documented side effects.
Iodoral is simply Lugal
solution in tablet form.
Iodine excretion studies show that when the proper form of iodine is consumed, the body eliminates the excess. No studies have indicated any buildup of iodine toxicity. Iodine Research
